Product Description

The 0.56" 2-Digit Display is designed for multiplexed operation. While it has 18 physical pin slots, it typically uses only 10 pins to control all 14 segments and 2 decimal points. The two digits share the same segment pins (A-G and DP), but have independent common cathode pins. This allows you to control 16 individual LEDs using very few microcontroller pins, making it perfect for percentage indicators, channel numbers, or simple countdown timers.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Current Limiting: Always use current-limiting resistors (220Ω to 470Ω) on the segment pins (A-G). Without them, the LEDs will draw too much current and burn out or damage your Arduino pins.

  • Common Cathode Logic: To light up a segment, connect the Common Digit Pin to Ground and pull the specific Segment Pin (A-G) High (3.3V or 5V).

  • Ghosting Prevention: When multiplexing (switching between the tens and units digit), ensure you turn off all segments for a tiny fraction of a millisecond (blanking) before switching to the next digit. This prevents "ghosting" where the number from one digit faintly appears on the other.

  • Pin Mapping: Since these displays come in various internal wiring configurations, use a 3V coin cell battery or a multimeter in "Diode Test" mode to manually verify which pins correspond to which segments before soldering.
