Unlike optical endstops, mechanical switches are immune to ambient light interference and dust, making them highly reliable in the debris-heavy environments of 3D printing and milling.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Normally Open vs. Closed: In most 3D printer firmwares (like Marlin), you must specify if your endstop is Normally Open (NO) or Normally Closed (NC). These modules are typically wired so the signal changes when pressed; ensure your Configuration.h file matches the physical behavior to avoid the printer trying to move "past" its physical limits.

  • Mounting Tension: When installing, ensure the switch is positioned so that the moving part hits the metal lever, not the plastic body of the switch. Hitting the plastic body can shatter the switch casing over time.

  • Cable Management: Use the long 70cm cable to route wires through drag chains or cable sleeves. Keep endstop wires separate from high-current motor wires where possible to prevent "EMI cross-talk," which can cause random "fake" endstop triggers during a print.

  • The "Homing" Test: Before running a full homing sequence, manually trigger the switch with your finger while the axis is moving slowly. If the motor doesn't stop, turn off the power immediately and check your wiring or firmware settings.
