The 2000W 220V SCR Voltage Regulator is a high-power electronic solution designed for adjusting the effective voltage of AC loads. Utilizing a Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR), this module clips the AC sine wave to vary the power delivered to the connected device. It is a versatile tool for dimming incandescent lamps, controlling the temperature of heating elements (like soldering irons or water heaters), and regulating the speed of AC brushed universal motors (found in drills and blenders). The board is engineered with thick copper traces and an integrated aluminum heatsink to manage the thermal demands of high-wattage operation.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The "Inductive Load" Rule: While rated for 2000W with resistive loads (like a heater), you should significantly de-rate the module when using inductive loads (like motors). For AC motors, we recommend not exceeding 500W–800W to account for high start-up currents and back-EMF.

  • Not for Brushless/Capacitor Motors: This regulator will not work with brushless AC motors, induction motors (like ceiling fans), or devices with electronic start-up circuits. Using it on these may result in a loud hum or motor failure.

  • Lethal Voltage Warning: CRITICAL: This entire module is "Hot" when plugged in. There is no galvanic isolation between the control circuit and the 220V AC mains. Never touch any part of the PCB, heatsink, or potentiometer shaft while the unit is connected to power. Always mount this inside a non-conductive plastic or earthed metal enclosure.

  • Minimum Load: Some SCR regulators require a minimum load (usually 10W–20W) to show a voltage change on a multimeter. If you measure the output without a load connected, you might see 220V regardless of the knob position.

  • Thermal Monitoring: If the heatsink becomes too hot to touch (above 70°C) during operation, you are likely overloading the module or need to add an external cooling fan to the enclosure.
