Product Description & Technical Details
Product Description
The DRV8825 Stepper Motor Driver is a powerful upgrade over the standard A4988, designed for driving bipolar stepper motors in high-precision applications. It features an adjustable current limit, over-current and over-temperature protection, and six microstep resolutions. Most notably, it supports 1/32-step microstepping, which allows for much smoother and quieter motor operation compared to 1/16-step drivers. This module is a favorite at Robogears for larger 3D printers and DIY CNC machines that require higher supply voltages (up to 45V) and more torque.
Key Highlights
High Resolution (1/32 Step): Allows for extremely fine positional control and reduces the mechanical vibration of the motor at low speeds.
Higher Voltage Range: Supports motor power supplies up to 45V, enabling better performance at high speeds compared to drivers capped at 35V.
Four-Layer PCB: Built on a 4-layer 2oz copper PCB for improved heat dissipation, helping the driver stay cool during long print or mill cycles.
Integrated Protection: Includes built-in thermal shutdown, under-voltage lockout, and crossover-current protection.
Included Heat Sink: Comes with a pre-sized aluminum heat sink to help manage the thermal load when pushing the current beyond 1.5A.
Technical Specifications
Control Interface: Simple STEP and DIRECTION interface.
Current Sensing: Requires external sensing resistors (included on board).
Dimensions: 20mm x 15mm (Standard Stepstick footprint).
Current Adjustment: Onboard multi-turn potentiometer.
Potentiometer Vref Logic: $Current Limit = Vref \times 2$
Installation Tip from Robogears
Orientation is critical! On a CNC Shield or RAMPS board, the DRV8825 is often installed in the opposite direction of an A4988. Check the pin labels on the bottom of the driver against your board. Crucial: Never connect or disconnect a motor while the driver is powered; doing so will cause an inductive spike that will permanently destroy the IC. Always adjust the current limit (Vref) using a ceramic screwdriver while measuring the voltage at the potentiometer to match your motor's rated current.
Note: This product includes the DRV8825 Module and one Aluminum Heat Sink. Header pins are pre-soldered. Product images are for illustration purposes only.
