Product Description

The TP5000 Charger Module is a versatile power management solution that supports multiple battery chemistries. The board features an "F" solder bridge that allows you to toggle between the 3.6V LiFePO4 charging profile and the standard 4.2V Li-ion profile. Its 800kHz switching frequency allows for the use of a small integrated inductor, keeping the module's footprint extremely compact. An onboard dual-color LED provides clear status indication: Red during the charging phase and Green (or Blue) once the battery has reached its full terminal voltage or is in standby.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The "F" Jumper Warning: Always verify the "F" jumper setting before connecting your battery. Charging a 3.6V LiFePO4 battery with the 4.2V setting will cause permanent damage or fire, while charging a 4.2V Li-ion battery at 3.6V will result in an incomplete charge.

  • Input Voltage Headroom: For the most stable 1A charge, provide a clean 5V DC input. While it supports up to 9V, the efficiency is highest when the input voltage is closer to the battery voltage.

  • Customizing Charge Current: If you need to charge smaller capacity batteries (like 500mAh), you can replace the sense resistor. The formula is $I_{charge} = 0.1 / R_{S}$. Replacing the default resistor with a $0.2\Omega$ resistor will limit the current to 500mA.

  • LED Extension: The onboard LED can be desoldered, and a common-cathode dual-color LED can be wired to the pads for panel-mount applications in custom enclosures.
