Product Description

The TP4056 Protection Module is a complete constant-current/constant-voltage linear charger for single-cell lithium-ion batteries. Its SOP-8 package and low external component count make it ideal for portable applications. Unlike basic TP4056 boards, this "Protection" version includes a secondary circuit that monitors the battery voltage. It automatically disconnects the load if the battery drops below $2.5V$ (preventing permanent cell damage) or if a short circuit occurs at the output. Dual onboard LEDs provide instant status: Red for "Charging" and Blue/Green for "Fully Charged."

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The "OUT" vs "B" Pads: Always connect your battery to the B+ and B- pads. Your project (the load) should be connected to the OUT+ and OUT- pads. This ensures the protection circuit can cut power to your project if the battery runs too low.

  • Heat Management: Since this is a linear charger, it dissipates excess voltage as heat. When charging at $1A$ from a $5V$ source, the chip can reach $60^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$. If the board is inside a small enclosure, we recommend adding a tiny copper heatsink on top of the TP4056 IC.

  • Programing the Current: If you are charging a small battery (less than 1000mAh), you should lower the charging current. The current is set by the $R_{prog}$ resistor (usually $1.2k\Omega$ for $1A$). Replacing it with a $2.4k\Omega$ resistor will reduce the current to $500mA$, providing a safer charge for smaller cells.

  • Ammeter Connection: If you want to measure the charging current, connect your ammeter in series only with the $5V$ input, not between the module and the battery, to avoid interfering with the voltage sensing accuracy.
