The 3.7V Battery Indicator is engineered for "glance-and-go" monitoring. It functions by measuring the real-time voltage of the connected cell and comparing it against predefined internal thresholds. The module consists of a dedicated controller and a high-contrast display that remains visible even in low-light conditions. Its simple two-wire interface allows it to be connected directly to the battery terminals or through a momentary push-button for on-demand checking, ensuring it doesn't drain the battery when not in use.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Momentary Switch Setup: To prevent the indicator from constantly drawing 5mA, wire it through a momentary push-button. This allows you to check the battery status only when needed, which is critical for small-capacity batteries (under 500mAh).

  • Accuracy Note: Voltage-based indicators are most accurate when the battery is "at rest" (not being charged or heavily discharged). If you check the level while a motor is running, the "voltage sag" may cause the indicator to show a lower percentage than what is actually available.

  • Reverse Polarity Caution: This module typically does not have reverse polarity protection. Double-check your connections before powering on, as reversing the red and black wires can instantly burn out the display controller.

  • Color-Coding Tapes: If using this in a multi-cell project (like 2S or 3S), ensure you are using the correct version. A 1S indicator connected to a 2S (7.4V) battery will be permanently damaged by the overvoltage.
