Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Parallel Only: You can connect multiple 18650 cells to increase the "mAh" capacity, but they must be in parallel (all positives together, all negatives together). Connecting them in series will deliver 7.4V or higher, which will instantly burn out the module's IC.

  • The "0%" Calibration: When you first connect your batteries, the display might show an incorrect percentage. To calibrate it, perform one full charge cycle: charge the batteries to 100% until the module cuts off, then discharge them completely. The IC will "learn" the capacity of your specific cells.

  • Wire Gauge for 2.4A: At a 2.4A output, the current drawn from the battery can exceed 4A. Use thick, short copper wires (18-22 AWG) for the battery-to-board connection to prevent voltage drops that cause the module to shut down prematurely.

  • Powering Low-Current Devices: Some smart modules have an "Auto-Sleep" feature that shuts down the boost circuit if a device (like an Arduino) draws very little current (under 50mA). If your project keeps turning off, you may need to add a "dummy load" resistor.
