Product Description

The DS18B20 Module is designed for easy integration, featuring a pre-mounted sensor on a PCB with a built-in power indicator LED. It can be powered directly from the data line ("Parasite Power" mode), eliminating the need for an external power supply in some configurations. Because the output is digital, it is immune to electrical noise, making it the industry standard for environmental monitoring, industrial systems, and consumer thermal control products.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The Pull-up Resistor: The 1-Wire bus requires a 4.7kΩ pull-up resistor between the DATA pin and VCC. While many modules have this resistor pre-soldered, always check with a multimeter. If your readings are consistently "85°C" or "0°C," a missing or incorrect pull-up resistor is the likely culprit.

  • Parasite Power Mode: For very long wire runs or to save wire, you can connect the VCC and GND pins of the sensor together to Ground. The sensor will then "steal" power from the data line during high-logic states. Note that this mode requires slightly more careful timing in your software.

  • Resolution vs. Speed: If you need very fast updates, set the resolution to 9-bit (0.5°C increments), which takes only 93.75ms to convert. For high precision, use 12-bit (0.0625°C increments), but be prepared for the 750ms delay per reading.

  • Waterproofing: If you intend to measure liquid temperatures (like a fish tank), do not use this PCB module. Instead, look for the waterproof DS18B20 probe version, which houses the sensor in a stainless steel tube with sealed wires.
