Product Description

The Pro Mini Official Version is engineered for maximum efficiency and minimalism. By removing the USB interface, the board significantly reduces power consumption, making it ideal for battery-operated applications. It features a standard 6-pin header (FTDI header) for programming and power, allowing you to use a single external FTDI cable or basic USB-to-TTL adapter for all your Pro Mini boards. Despite its tiny size, it retains the full processing power of the ATmega328P, including support for I2C, SPI, and UART communication protocols.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Programming Requirement: Remember that this board cannot be plugged directly into a computer via USB. You must use an external FTDI Basic Breakout or a USB-to-TTL adapter. Ensure your adapter is set to 5V (not 3.3V) to match this board's logic level.

  • The "Auto-Reset" Trick: When using an FTDI adapter, connect the DTR pin. This allows the Arduino IDE to automatically reset the Pro Mini when you click "Upload." Without the DTR connection, you will have to manually press the Reset button at the exact moment the IDE says "Uploading..."

  • RAW vs. VCC: If you are using a 9V battery, connect it to the RAW pin. The onboard regulator will drop it to a safe 5V. If you have a steady 5V source (like from a phone charger), connect it directly to VCC to bypass the regulator and save energy.

  • Header Selection: This board usually comes with un-soldered headers. For the slimmest profile, consider soldering your wires directly to the pads instead of using pins, or use right-angle headers to keep the wiring parallel to the board.
