Product Description

The KY-008 Module is a "plug-and-play" laser solution featuring a 6mm brass laser head mounted on a standard PCB. The brass head acts as a small heat sink and allows for minor manual focal adjustments by turning the front lens. Its 3-pin interface (GND, VCC, Signal) is designed for direct connection to microcontrollers like Arduino. When the signal pin is pulled HIGH, the laser activates instantly. Its low current draw (under 40mA) ensures it can be powered directly from a digital I/O pin without the need for an external driver or transistor.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The "Invisible" Tripwire: To create a security alarm, point this laser at a KY-018 Photoresistor (LDR) Module. When an object blocks the beam, the LDR's resistance will change instantly, allowing your Arduino to trigger a buzzer or notification.

  • Heat Management: While the brass head helps, avoid leaving the laser on continuously for hours. If your project requires a "constant-on" state, implement a PWM duty cycle (e.g., 80% brightness) to reduce heat buildup and extend the life of the laser diode.

  • Adjusting the Focus: If the red dot appears "fuzzy" or too large at a distance, you can gently rotate the black plastic lens at the very front of the brass cylinder to sharpen the point.

  • Safety First: Never point the laser beam at people’s eyes or reflective surfaces like mirrors. Even a 5mW laser can cause permanent retinal damage or temporary "flash blindness."
