Product Description The Accuplus AA 1800mAh Ni-MH battery pair is a high-capacity rechargeable solution designed to replace single-use alkaline batteries in high-drain devices. With a 1800mAh rating, these cells provide a balance of long runtime and rapid rechargeability, making them ideal for motorized toys, wireless controllers, digital cameras, and portable medical equipment. Unlike older Ni-Cd batteries, these Ni-MH cells have a significantly reduced memory effect and are more environmentally friendly, offering hundreds of charge cycles for sustainable power.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Series Stacking for 4.8V: Using this pair (2 cells) in series gives you 2.4V. To power a 5V system like an Arduino or Raspberry Pi Pico, we recommend using two pairs (4 cells) in series to achieve a nominal 4.8V. This is often close enough to 5V to run logic circuits without a regulator, though a boost/buck converter is always safer.

  • Smart Charging: To get the longest life out of your Accuplus batteries, use a charger with $-\Delta V$ (negative delta voltage) detection. Overcharging Ni-MH cells can cause internal pressure buildup and venting.

  • The "Alkaline Swap": While these are 1.2V and Alkalines are 1.5V, most devices work better with these under load. Alkaline batteries drop to 1.1V very quickly when a motor starts, whereas Ni-MH stays steady at 1.2V for almost the entire run.

  • Maintenance Charge: If your robot is sitting on the shelf for more than 3 months, give the batteries a top-up charge. Ni-MH cells have a natural self-discharge rate; keeping them slightly charged prevents the voltage from dropping to a level where a charger might fail to recognize them.
