Product Description The TCRT5000 is a compact reflective sensor that houses an infrared emitter and a phototransistor in a single leaded package. The black plastic housing is designed to block visible light while allowing IR to pass through. It works by emitting an IR signal and sensing the reflection off a surface. This makes it the industry standard for line-following robots, as it can easily distinguish between a black line (which absorbs IR) and a white surface (which reflects it). Its small form factor allows for high-density sensor arrays on the front of a robot chassis.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Line Follower Secret: For the best results in a line follower, mount the sensor about 3mm to 5mm above the ground. If it is too high or too low, the contrast between black and white surfaces will decrease.

  • Resistor Requirements: * For the Emitter (TX) side: Use a 220Ω resistor when connecting to 5V.

    • For the Receiver (RX) side: Use a 10kΩ pull-up resistor. Connect one pin to Ground, the other to your Analog Pin, and pull that same pin to 5V through the resistor.

  • Cross-Talk Prevention: The TCRT5000 has a built-in physical barrier between the emitter and receiver, but if you are getting "noisy" readings, ensure there isn't a high-gloss surface reflecting light back into the sensor from the sides.

  • PCB Layout: Because the leads are close together, ensure your solder joints are clean to avoid shorting the emitter and receiver circuits.
