Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears
Testing Safety: When demonstrating this kit with a candle, always place the candle on a non-flammable surface (like a metal tray). Use the height-adjustable grill to keep the sensor roughly 1–2 inches above the flame.
Sensor Care: Do not touch the naked flame directly to the heat sensor; the radiant heat is enough to trigger the alarm. Touching the flame directly can damage the sensor coating over time.
Sensitivity Calibration: If the alarm takes too long to go off, move the sensor slightly lower. If it stays on too long after the candle is removed, you can gently blow on the sensor to speed up the cooling process.
Expansion Idea: Advanced students can try adding a small DC fan to the circuit so that the alarm not only sounds but also attempts to "blow out" the heat source when triggered.
