Product Description The 5mm Blue Diffused LED is the classic industry-standard indicator for electronic circuits. Unlike "water-clear" LEDs that produce a sharp, blinding beam, this LED features a blue-tinted frosted lens. This diffusion layer ensures that the light is spread evenly across the dome, making the status of the LED clearly visible from multiple angles without straining the eyes. These LEDs are perfect for power indicators, signal lights on control panels, and status beacons for robotic systems where a soft, professional blue glow is required.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Indicator Logic: Blue LEDs typically require a higher forward voltage (3.0V – 3.4V) than red or yellow versions. When powering from an Arduino (5V), we recommend a 150Ω to 220Ω resistor for a standard indicator brightness.

  • Battery Direct Power: These LEDs pair perfectly with 3.7V Lithium-Ion batteries. Because the voltage is so close, you only need a small 22Ω to 47Ω resistor to limit the current, making them very energy-efficient for battery-powered bots.

  • Panel Mounting: If you are building a custom chassis, use a 5mm LED plastic holder to secure these into your panel. The diffused lens is much better for panels than clear ones because it can be seen clearly from the side as the robot moves.

  • PWM Dimming: These are excellent for "pulsing" or "breathing" status effects. Use an Arduino PWM pin with a 220Ω resistor to create a smooth fading blue light that signals "System Standby" or "Searching."
