The TNY289PG AC-DC Controller is designed to simplify the complexities of flyback power supply design. It features a 725V rated MOSFET that provides an increased safety margin for universal input designs (85VAC to 265VAC), protecting against line surges and spikes. The IC utilizes an On/Off control scheme which provides high efficiency even at light loads, making it fully compliant with global energy efficiency standards. With its built-in auto-restart, line under-voltage detection, and frequency jittering to reduce EMI, the TNY289PG is a "system-on-a-chip" for reliable, low-power SMPS applications.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The Bypass Capacitor: The BP/M pin (Bypass/Multi-function) requires a high-quality ceramic capacitor (typically 0.1µF to 10µF) connected to the Source. The value of this capacitor selects the current limit of the internal MOSFET—refer to the datasheet to match this value to your transformer's primary inductance.

  • PCB Heat Sinking: In DIP-8 packages, heat is primarily dissipated through the Source pins (Pins 2, 3, 4, and 8). When designing your PCB, connect these pins to a large copper area (pour) on the board to act as a natural heatsink. Avoid placing heat-sensitive components like electrolytic capacitors directly adjacent to these pins.

  • Line UV Detection: If you want the power supply to shut down during "brownout" conditions, connect a 2MΩ resistor from the high-voltage DC bus to the EN/UV pin. This prevents the IC from attempting to switch at dangerously low input voltages which could saturate the transformer.
