Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Soldering Caution: Lithium batteries are extremely heat-sensitive. When soldering the tabs to your PCB, use a high-wattage iron (40W-60W) to complete the joint in under 2 seconds. Excessive heat can damage the internal seals, leading to leakage or reduced capacity.

  • Polarity Verification: Always check the PCB marking before installation. On these tabbed cells, the larger flat surface (top) is the Positive (+) terminal. Reversing the polarity in an RTC circuit can damage the clock chip or the battery itself.

  • No-Recharge Warning: This is a non-rechargeable primary cell. If your circuit is powered by an external source (like USB or a main battery), you must include a blocking diode (e.g., 1N4148) to prevent current from flowing back into the CR1220.

  • Cleaning: After soldering, ensure you clean any flux residue from around the battery terminals using Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) to prevent micro-leaks or corrosion over long-term use.
