Product Description

The LA4440 / CD4440 is a versatile power amplifier that offers two distinct modes of operation. In Stereo Mode, it delivers a clean 6W per channel, perfect for small desktop speakers. In Bridge Mode (BTL), the two internal amplifiers work together to deliver a powerful 19W mono output, capable of driving larger subwoofers or PA speakers. The IC features a unique built-in audio muting function and comprehensive protection circuitry, including thermal shutdown and pin-to-pin short protection, ensuring long-term durability even under heavy use.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

Heat Sink Requirement: The LA4440 generates significant heat when running at high volumes, especially in Bridge Mode. You must bolt the IC to a large aluminum heat sink. Use thermal paste between the IC's metal tab and the heat sink to ensure efficient cooling; failure to do so will trigger the thermal shutdown within minutes.
Power Supply Choice: While it can run on 12V, the IC performs best at 13.2V to 15V. A standard 12V 2A transformer or a car battery is the ideal power source. Avoid using "noisy" cheap SMPS adapters, as the LA4440 will amplify any high-frequency switching noise, resulting in an audible hiss.
Decoupling Capacitors: Place a 1000uF or 2200uF electrolytic capacitor as close as possible to the VCC and GND pins of the IC. This acts as a local energy reservoir, preventing the sound from "clipping" or distorting during deep bass hits.
Input Shielding: Because the LA4440 has high gain, it is very sensitive to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Always use shielded audio cables for the input signals to prevent picking up 50Hz/60Hz mains hum.
