Product Description

The TB6612FNG Module is engineered for precision motion control. Unlike Bipolar-junction transistor drivers that drop significant voltage (wasted as heat), the MOSFETs in this chip have a very low ON-resistance, ensuring that almost all your battery power reaches the motors. The module features a dedicated Standby (STBY) pin, which can be pulled low to put the driver into a deep-sleep mode, drastically extending battery life for IoT and mobile robotics projects. Its breadboard-friendly header layout makes it easy to integrate with Arduino, ESP32, or STM32 microcontrollers.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

The STBY Pin Requirement: One of the most common "mistakes" is forgetting to connect the STBY pin. By default, it must be pulled HIGH (to VCC) for the driver to function. If you leave it disconnected, your motors will not move, even if your code is perfect.
Power Sequencing: Always connect your Logic VCC (2.7V-5.5V) and Motor VM (up to 13.5V) separately. While they can share a ground, keeping the logic power stable prevents the microcontroller from resetting when the motors pull a heavy "stall" current.
Decoupling is Essential: Although the module has small onboard caps, we recommend adding a 100uF electrolytic capacitor across the VM and GND pins if you are using high-torque motors. This prevents voltage ripples from interfering with your sensors or MCU.
L298N Comparison: If you are switching from an L298N, you will notice your robot moves faster at the same PWM duty cycle. This is because the TB6612FNG has a much lower voltage drop (approx. 0.5V vs 2.0V+ on the L298N). You may need to recalibrate your PID loops or speed settings.
