Product Description The MG996R is an upgraded version of the famous MG995 servo, featuring a redesigned IC and control system for improved accuracy and holding torque. This high-torque digital servo is built with a rugged all-metal gear train and a double ball-bearing shaft, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications like robotic arms, hexapods, and 1/8 scale RC cars. Unlike analog servos, its digital controller provides a faster response and a tighter dead band, ensuring your project maintains its position even under significant mechanical stress.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • 9V Battery Use: Do not use a 9V battery to power this servo. The high current draw of the MG996R will cause a 9V battery to voltage-drop instantly, leading to "jittering." Use a 6V 2A DC Adapter or a 6V Lead Acid battery for best results.

  • 18650 Cell: Use two 18650 cells in series (7.4V) paired with a Buck Converter set to 6V. This setup provides the high current (Amps) necessary for the servo to reach its maximum 11kg torque.

  • IC & Capacitor Tip: Always place a 470uF to 1000uF Electrolytic Capacitor across the servo's VCC and GND lines. This "decoupling" capacitor prevents the servo's motor noise from interfering with your Arduino’s logic. Pair it with a PCA9685 16-Channel Servo Driver if controlling multiple motors.
