Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Robot Mobility: This motor is ideal for "Explorer" style robots. On a 10cm wheel, a 200 RPM motor will cover approximately 1 meter per second, making it significantly faster than the 100 RPM version.

  • Torque vs. Speed: If your robot is becoming very heavy (over 2-3kg), consider if you need the speed of the 200 RPM motor or the torque of the 100 RPM version. At higher RPMs, the mechanical advantage is lower, so ensure your motor driver can handle the increased current draw during startups.

  • Driver Recommendation: The L298N is a reliable choice for this motor. For better efficiency and heat management, the TB6612FNG or a MOSFET-based driver is recommended if you plan to run the motor near its stall current.
