Product Description The 12V RGB 5050 SMD Optical Module is a rugged, versatile lighting solution designed for both indoor and outdoor applications. Each module contains three high-intensity 5050 SMD LEDs housed in a waterproof injection-molded casing. Unlike standard LED strips, these modules are interconnected by flexible wires, allowing them to be installed around corners, curved surfaces, or in high-vibration environments. With its 4-wire common anode configuration, you can achieve millions of color combinations when connected to an RGB controller.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Control Logic: This is a Common Anode module. To light up a color, connect the +12V wire to your power source and pull the specific color wire (R, G, or B) to Ground.

  • Driving with Arduino: To control these with a 5V microcontroller, you must use a power transistor (like the TIP122) or a MOSFET (like the IRF540N) for each color channel. The Arduino cannot provide the 12V or the current required directly from its pins.

  • Series vs. Parallel: These modules are designed to be daisy-chained. However, if you are running a very long string (more than 20 modules), we recommend injecting power at both ends to prevent voltage drop and ensure consistent brightness.

  • Automotive Use: These are perfect for 12V vehicle interiors or underglow. Since car batteries can fluctuate up to 14.4V, these modules are robust enough to handle the environment, but using a 12V regulator will maximize their lifespan.
