Product Description

The TMB12A05 Buzzer is engineered for high-pitched, clear audible notification. It utilizes electromagnetic technology, where an internal coil drives a metal diaphragm to generate sound. Because it is an "Active" type, it does not require a complex square-wave signal from a microcontroller to work; simply connecting it to a 5V power source is enough to trigger a constant beep. The module is housed in a durable, miniature casing that fits easily on PCBs and breadboards, featuring a protective label on the sound hole that should be removed after soldering for maximum volume.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Active vs. Passive Identification: To check if your buzzer is active, connect it to a 1.5V or 9V battery. If it makes a sound immediately, it is Active. If it only clicks once, it is Passive and requires a PWM signal to make music.

  • Polarity Matters: These buzzers are polarized. The longer pin (or the side marked with a '+') must be connected to the positive voltage, and the shorter pin to Ground. Reversing the polarity may result in no sound or damage to the internal oscillator.

  • The "Loudness" Sticker: These buzzers ship with a yellow/white sticker covering the sound hole. This is to prevent flux and cleaning fluids from entering the buzzer during industrial manufacturing. For your prototype, peel the sticker off to unlock the full 85dB volume.

  • Transistor Switching: While an Arduino pin can drive one buzzer (~25mA), if you are building a system with multiple buzzers or long wires, use a simple NPN transistor (like BC547) to switch the buzzer. This protects your microcontroller from inductive spikes and ensures maximum volume.
