Product Description

The RCWL-0516 is a modern alternative to PIR sensors, offering superior penetrating detection capabilities. Because it uses microwave induction, it is not affected by ambient temperature, making it highly reliable in outdoor or high-heat environments where PIR sensors often fail. The module is incredibly compact and features a wide input voltage range, allowing it to be powered directly by batteries or standard 5V/12V power supplies. When motion is detected, the OUT pin stays HIGH for approximately 2 to 3 seconds, which is sufficient time for a microcontroller to trigger an alarm, light, or camera.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The "Clear Path" Rule: While it can see through plastic, do not place any metal objects or thick copper wires directly in front of the antenna (the circular trace on the PCB). Metal reflects microwaves and will create a "blind zone" or cause constant false triggering.

  • Distance Tuning: If the sensor is too sensitive and triggering through walls when you don't want it to, you can add a 1M Ohm resistor to the R-GN pads on the back. This will reduce the detection range to approximately 5 meters.

  • Power Stability: This sensor is highly sensitive to power supply noise. If you experience random triggers, add a 100uF electrolytic capacitor across the VIN and GND pins to smooth out the voltage.

  • Mounting Orientation: For the best 360-degree coverage, mount the sensor flat (parallel to the ground). Avoid mounting it vertically against a wall if you want to detect motion equally in all directions.
