At Robogears, we recommend this version for its integrated DB9 RS232 port, allowing you to connect it directly to PLCs, desktop PCs, or older industrial controllers without needing logic level converters. The module supports a full range of GSM functions, including SMS, Voice calls, and GPRS data. Whether you are building an SMS-based alert system for a factory floor or a remote data logger at your Pimpri facility, this SIM800A variant offers superior electrical protection and signal stability.

  • Industrial RS232 Interface: Features a standard DB9 connector with onboard voltage level shifters (MAX232 equivalent), making it safe for ±12V serial communication.

  • Dual-Band 2G Connectivity: Optimized for 900/1800MHz bands, providing reliable coverage across major Indian cellular networks (excluding Jio).

  • Wide Input Voltage Range: The high-quality onboard power regulator allows the module to be powered by anything from 5V to 12V DC, ideal for automotive or industrial power rails.

  • Embedded TCP/IP Stack: Supports advanced internet protocols, enabling your device to upload data to web servers via HTTP or MQTT.

  • Voice & Audio Support: Includes dedicated pins for microphone and speaker, allowing for the integration of two-way voice communication.

  • Pin Definition (TTL Header):

    • VCC/GND: Power Input (Ensure 2A peak capability).

    • TXD/RXD: TTL Serial for Microcontrollers (3.3V/5V auto-sensing).

Prototyping & Engineering Tips (Robogears Exclusive)

  • Power Supply Selection: At our Pimpri workshop, we’ve found that the SIM800A can draw sudden current bursts of up to 2A during transmission. Always use a high-quality 12V 2A or 5V 2A DC Adapter. Under-powering is the #1 cause of the module failing to register on the network.

  • The "Jio" Limitation: Please remember that the SIM800A is a 2G-only module. It will work perfectly with Airtel, Vi, and BSNL in India, but it is not compatible with Jio, which is a 4G-only network.

  • RS232 vs TTL: You can only use one interface at a time for data. Use the DB9 port for PC/PLC connection and the TTL pins for Arduino/ESP32 connection.

  • Network LED Logic:

    • Fast Blink (1s): Searching for network.

    • Slow Blink (3s): Registered and ready to use.

    • Very Fast Blink: GPRS data active.
