Product Description The 28BYJ-48 5V is a compact, gear-reduced stepper motor designed for precision motion control at low power. With its internal 1:64 gear ratio, this motor provides excellent holding torque and incremental accuracy, making it ideal for micro-positioning tasks. Since it operates on 5V, it can be powered directly from most microcontroller development boards (via a driver), making it a favorite for DIY projects like automatic feeders, mini CNCs, and rotating sensor mounts.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Power Source: While the motor runs on 5V, it is best to power it from an external 5V 1A power supply rather than the Arduino's 5V pin to avoid voltage drops during high-frequency stepping.

  • Driver Pairing: Always use a ULN2003 driver board. This motor is unipolar, and the driver makes it easy to sequence the 4 phases using just 4 digital pins.

  • Speed vs. Torque: This motor is built for precision. Attempting to drive it faster than 15 RPM will likely result in stalled steps. For smooth movement, use the AccelStepper library to implement acceleration ramps.

  • Half-Stepping: For the smoothest rotation and highest resolution, use 8-step (half-step) sequences. This doubles your resolution and significantly reduces mechanical resonance.
