Product Description: The MG90S is the high-performance, metal-geared upgrade to the classic SG90 micro servo. Designed for applications that require more "muscle" and durability, it features a robust internal gear train that can withstand higher mechanical shocks and heavier loads without stripping. It maintains the same compact footprint as its plastic predecessor, making it a drop-in replacement for RC helicopters, small robotic arms, and steering mechanisms in 1:16 scale RC cars where precision and reliability are paramount.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Higher Stall Current: Because the MG90S has metal gears and a stronger motor, its stall current is higher than the SG90. If your servo "vibrates" or "hunts" for its position, it usually means your power supply isn't providing enough current. Use an external 6V 2A BEC or battery pack.

  • Linkage Geometry: Ensure your mechanical linkages do not hit a physical stop before the servo reaches its commanded angle. Stalling a metal gear servo generates heat quickly and can damage the internal control board.

  • End-Point Calibration: Use a servo tester to find the exact 0° and 180° points. Many MG90S units have a slightly wider or narrower pulse range (e.g., 500us to 2500us) than the standard 1000us-2000us.

  • Mounting: Use the included mounting screws and brass eyelets if your project involves high vibration (like an RC plane engine) to protect the plastic tabs from fatigue.
