Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears
The "Half-Lap" Technique: For maximum insulation and waterproofing, apply the tape using a 50% overlap (half-lap). This ensures every part of the wire is covered by at least two layers of tape.
Tension Control: Stretch the tape slightly as you wrap it; the "memory" of the PVC will cause it to contract, creating a tighter, more permanent seal. However, do not stretch the very last turn—apply the end with zero tension to prevent it from peeling back later.
Clean Surfaces: For the best bond, ensure the wire insulation or connector is free from oil, flux residue, or dust before applying.
Temporary Marking: Beyond insulation, black tape is excellent for marking the "Ground" or "Negative" polarity in custom battery harnesses to avoid accidental reverse-polarity connections.

Recommended Electrical Insulation Tapes
The 3M Scotch 3/4 in. x 66 ft. Black Vinyl Electrical Tape is an industry standard known for its superior adhesion and ability to withstand professional-grade electrical demands.
For general-purpose household repairs and light DIY projects, the Duck Brand 3/4 in. x 60 ft. Black Electrical Tape provides a reliable seal and is highly cost-effective for bulk use.
If you require high-visibility or color-coding for your wiring, the Commercial Electric 1/2 in. x 20 ft. Multi-Color Electrical Tape (10-Pack) includes various colors to help distinguish between live, neutral, and ground wires.
Disclaimer: Product dimensions may vary slightly depending on the manufacturing batch. Ensure the power is disconnected before applying tape to any exposed electrical conductors.
