Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • 9V Battery & 18650 Cell: When using these power sources, do not connect a DC motor or pump directly through the float switch. The startup current (Inrush current) of a pump will weld the internal reed switch contacts together. Always use a Relay Module or a MOSFET as an intermediary.

  • Logic Protection: For stable readings on 3.3V or 5V microcontrollers, use a 10k Ohm Pull-up resistor. This prevents the input pin from "floating" and causing false triggers in your code.

  • Filtering Noise: If the liquid surface is prone to ripples, add a 10uF Capacitor across the signal and ground pins. This acts as a hardware filter to prevent the switch from "chattering" rapidly.

  • Installation Tip: Ensure the tank surface around the 16mm hole is smooth and clean. Place the silicone gasket on the outside before tightening the nut to ensure the best possible seal against water pressure.
