Product Description & Technical Details
Product Description
The 52mm Glass Reed Switch is a passive electrical switch operated by an applied magnetic field. It consists of a pair of flexible, ferromagnetic metal reeds hermetically sealed in a glass envelope. When a permanent magnet or an electromagnet is brought near the switch, the magnetic flux causes the reeds to attract each other and touch, completing the electrical circuit. This non-contact sensing method is highly reliable, as the sealed environment protects the contacts from dust, moisture, and corrosion. It is widely used for door/window sensors in security systems, liquid level sensing with a float magnet, and speed sensing in bicycle computers.
Key Highlights
Contactless Operation: Since the switch is triggered by magnetic fields, there is no physical wear and tear on the trigger mechanism, ensuring millions of cycles.
Hermetically Sealed: The glass enclosure prevents oxidation of the contacts, making it ideal for use in hazardous, damp, or dusty environments.
Zero Standby Power: As a passive component, it consumes no electricity until the circuit is closed, making it perfect for battery-powered IoT devices.
Versatile Mounting: The long 52mm leads can be easily bent, trimmed, or soldered onto PCBs and custom sensor housings.
Fast Response: Capable of high-speed switching, suitable for proximity counting and rpm sensing in industrial machinery.

Installation Tip from Robogears
Glass reed switches are extremely fragile. When bending the leads for PCB mounting, always use a pair of long-nose pliers to hold the lead near the glass seal; never put stress directly on the glass-to-metal interface, or it will crack and fail. To interface this with an Arduino, connect one end to a Digital Pin and the other to Ground, then enable the internal INPUT_PULLUP. When a magnet is present, the pin will read LOW.
Note: This product is the glass reed switch ONLY. Magnets and mounting clips are sold separately. Product images are for illustration purposes only.
